I think explaining to my customers the strategy needed being an effective content marketing campaign is one of my biggest struggles, so this definitely comes in handy.

That’s up to your agency. If doing positioning and helping startups get from 0 to 1 is part of your service then keep working with them. For us, we have a productized service (there’s no customization), so we have a very clear idea of who our process will work for and why. There’s a high probability that we wouldn’t be able to get results for clients who meet the criteria we listed above — it’s not to say that’s always true, but we don’t want to take a chance.

Being that the main thing we care about is driving results for clients, it makes sense to exclude companies we don’t think we can help as much.

For the second question, you can email it to me or send it to me via Twitter.

Yes, it’s not to say that someone who has scaled a blog before can’t start a blog from scratch. If the person has experience building writing teams and driving traffic to content, then it’s likely they’d be able to grow a blog from the ground up.

However growing a blog from 50k visitors a month to 75k visitors a month is very different than going from 0-20k. For the former, you can often have a couple of blog posts published that aren’t promoted and that happen to rank for a valuable keyword that make up a majority of that traffic increase. For the latter, it’s much harder to go from 0 to 20k in any short amount of time period (1-2 year or less).

Agree 100%. Starting from scratch is a big difference from taking an existing blog with traffic. This experience is priceless.
Thanks for sharing.

When I saw the title I jumped, because this is a challenge I have been trying to solve not only from a content marketing perspective, but also from a digital marketing perspective in general. Just like you, I took over some customers who did not yet have a product market fit and everytime we ended the contract because they wanted to see results and results to them was people buying. They either dont have the budget or patience to test various positioning angles of their products.

I have a question though. You say you don’t take customers who have not validated their offer through a cold channel, would you advice another agency to do so? Or would you generally say please agencies beware of such customers?

I have a second question, I wrote an article on this topic, not really only focused on content marketing, but marketing in general (BTW I cited and commente about one of your articles in my article). What is the best way of getting you to read this article and give me feedback?

I don’t want to drop it here for respect of your platform, unless you give me the permission.

Thaank you again
