They themselves outsourced the work, the articles were short, they were going for search terms that were desirable but WAY to crowded, and they sounded NOTHING like how we wrote. I say… Write your own stuff, create your won stuff, learn and master every skill necessary to run and manage your own show. Then once and ONLY once you’ve done that, outsource CAREFULLY. How else would you know if someone even did a good job? another great article…

People will try anything these day – up to and including even buying Twitter followers thinking the instant gratification will result in imaginary new sales – but hey, people are silly!

Not to mention what happens socially.

Thanks for sharing. We are implementing something similar with our content writers as well.

Our oldest content has all these issues, so painful. As B2C we now replace the ‘internal expert’ with a customer interview and use example as it provides us more diversity, and its created some of our best content yet. The idea of interviewing our customer support team as part of the brief process is HUGE takeaway and completely actionable, I can’t wait to do this.

I interview the internal SME and pass the transcript off to the writer with a brief. And because they don’t know the product well, I add the in-depth product mentions in when I receive the draft back.

Yeah this can work well too. Basically you, as someone with deep product expertise or company knowledge act as a serious editing step.

Yes! Interviewing customers in B2C is a great idea. Customer support is also good. Another to consider in some foundaitonal product related pieces is those that were responsible for the product design/formulation as they can speak to the detailed design decisions they made, why they made them, how it’s different from what’s out there, etc. (A famous example of this not for blog posts but marketing content is Apple having Jony Ive or other engineers speak about the details of how the products are made…imagine a written blog post version of that ranking for product related keywords in your space…really powerful).
